“Had an AMAZING time here…we tried 5 different premium sakes (btw never drank sake in my life before) and loved it. Monica was our hostess who was an encyclopedia of knowledge, breaking down the origin of sake, what makes sake unique, how it's made, etc.” Nee - Yelp

These bottles have a very limited production with sales often being driven by the cache of obtaining a bottle or two, but the high prices and limited run does not always guarantee a quality product. In Cult Wines: California, Oregon, and Washington we taste some the best examples these producers have to offer and see why the high price and limited availability still makes seeking them out a worthwhile endeavor.

New York Vintners invites you to spend an unforgettable afternoon with sake producers from 2 of Japan’s most legendary breweries…
Jokigen Brewery of Yamagata is well known for brewing sake with more varieties of rice than any brewery in Japan (30 to be exact). Mr. Sato of Jokigen will guide guests through a comparative tasting of 3 Junmai Ginjos, each made with a different strain of sake rice. We will also be tasting Jokigen’s methode champenoise sparkling sake, still unreleased on the East Coast.
Niizawa Shuzo of Miyagi produces the famous brands Atagonomatsu and Hakurakusei. Established in 1873, this brewery has earned its name by consistently employing new and revolutionary methods of production. Niizawa Shuzo polishes their own rice on premise, and has recently developed a “Super 9” Junmai Daiginjo that polishes the rice down to 9%, which makes this the highest polished sake ever to be developed. Mr. Sugihara of Niizawa Shuzo will guide us through three sakes from his brewery and also allow us a taste of the famed “Super 9.” He will explain why the brewery decided to polish this far, and uncovering the true flavor of the “shinpaku” (pure starch).
Please join us for an intimate afternoon of education and discussion with two of Japan’s most innovative sake producers. Chef Christopher Meeker will be complementing the sakes with a medley of international flavors.

Rouget, E.
Under the tutelage of his late uncle, Henri Jayer, Emmanuel Rouget set up his own winemaking cellars in Flagey in 1985. He acquired land from his brother Lucien, around Vosne Romanee, on a share-cropping basis. Within a decade, Emmanuel expanding his domaine, farming some of Henri Jayer's vineyards. He has remained faithful to the techniques employed by his late uncle - namely an insistence on ultra low yields, a pre-fermentation cold maceration and the maturation of the wines in 100% new oak barrels.
