Up Until 26th Amendment: Burgundy Masterclass in a Box

There are thousands of great winemakers in the world today and a million more that are not. I have been blown away by Herri Mina Blanc, Schafer-Frohlich Blanc de Noir, and ALIT Pinot Noir. Rare (not scarce) unicorns with a proud voice. I have had Harlan and Petrus many times and never walked away more than thankful for the access. 1945 Mouton is mind BENDING. Almost every vintage of y’Quem. Henri Jayer.  I have never had Romanee-Conti or played Augusta. Please, we’re talking RC RC, and Cypress in mind blowing; 16th into a wee breeze. I’m not saying I am right; I am saying that has been my experience.

Burgundy OWC Packs from Louis Jadot.  

Why?

The reason why I am picking our Jadot packs in because they are the embodiment of what we look for in the wine world but LET’S DEBATE.  

I love the Jadot packs for the following:

• Burgundy is the most difficult wine region in the world to begin to understand and this WOODEN BOX literally illustrates how a single producer makes myriad wines across an entire region of completely unique vineyards all from the same grape.

• Burgundy is the most expensive and elusive region in the world by a mile. If you get a sweet tooth for Burgundy, you had better be rich or have generous friends and if you aren’t or don’t, but still love wine, you may very well miss out entirely. These wines are more affordable, in category, than any in the world. 

• Burgundy is the snobbiest wine region in the world, where big names are deemed inherently inferior. As anyone who loves Dom Perignon, Vega Sicilia, Antinori, Lokoya and Verite, Penfolds, and Gaja knows; that’s ridiculous.  

• The appreciation of WINE IN THE GLASS can only come through DRINKING lots and lots of wine side by side and in context of its origin, its neighbors and itself.  CHECK.

• Perhaps the single greatest truth in wine, forgiveness to Beaujolais Nouveau, et al, is that wine gets better with some amount of age. Unfortunately, we NEVER get to drink aged wine and thus we almost never drink a wine in its most perfect self. Nobody, and I MEAN NOBODY, is going to offer you a box of six successive vintages AGED at the winery in this condition at this price. NOBODY.

The quality of the wine in the glass. Premier red cru Burgundy, with age, of this quality, consistency and diversity is unheard of.  Its mind blowing.
